Aqua-Swirl®, Grit Separator Print E-mail

The patented Aqua-Swirl® Grit Separator provides a highly effective means for the removal of sediment, floating debris and grit. Swirl technology, or vortex separation, is a proven form of treatment to accelerate gravitational separation. Independent university laboratory performance evaluations have shown the Aqua-Swirl® achieves a TSS (Total Suspended Solids) removal of 91% calculated on a net annual basis.

Each Aqua-Swirl® Grit Separator is constructed of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP), and is therefore modular, lightweight and durable, eliminating the need for heavy lifting equipment during installation. Grit removal and inspection is easy, with surface skimmer and grit sump access that allow cleanout without entering the chamber.

Introduction

Grit Separator Introduction
Operation begins when wastewater enters the Aqua-Swirl™ by means of its tangential inlet pipe, which induces a circular (swirl or vortex) flow pattern. A combination of gravitational and hydrodynamic drag forces results in solids dropping out of the flow and migrating to the center of the swirl chamber where velocities are the lowest.

The settled solids fall into a grit sump where they are conveyed away from the system through a pipe outlet. The treated flow exits the Aqua-Swirl™ behind the arched inner baffle. A pipe outlet is provided just below the static water line in order to convey floatable debris and oils out of the treatment chamber.

Benefits

Modular and Customizable
The Aqua-Swirl® Grit Separator can be modified to fit a variety of applications. The angles for inlet and outlet lines can be modified to fit most applications. Two Aqua-Swirl® units can be placed side by side in order to treat a high-volume of water while occupying a small amount of space. Each system is customized and fabricated for the specific project.
Lightweight
Each Aqua-Swirl® Grit Separator is constructed of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP), and is therefore modular, lightweight and durable, eliminating the need for heavy lifting equipment during installation. The Aqua-Swirl® is easier and safer to handle while complying with ASTM-3753.
Durable
Each Aqua-Swirl® Grit Separator is constructed of Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP). FRP structures should last about 20 – 30 years if properly installed and operated. The structures contain a UV inhibitor in the gel coat to ensure that the structure will not have to be relined during the life of the structure. The deterioration rate of fiberglass, under the most severe conditions, is one tenth of 1 percent in 30 years.
Easy Maintenance
Inspection and cleanout of the Aqua-Swirl® is simple. The chamber can be inspected from the top of the unit. Free-floating oil and floatable debris can be directly observed through the provided service access. Surface skimmer and grit sump access allows cleanout without entering the chamber.
