Mount Vernon Addresses Flooding Issues with Stormwater Management

3/23/2015

Check out this article about flood management in Mount Vernon that was recently published in Storm Water Solutions.

Located along the banks of the Skagit River 60 miles north of Seattle is the City of Mount Vernon, Wash. This community, which is known for its annual Tulip Festival street fair, has been plagued by immense flooding. The devastating effects of this flooding have limited the city’s ability to promote its unique tourist opportunities.

In order to alleviate the flooding issue, the city developed a multi-year plan that included the purchase of a mobile floodwall that could be installed during events. This was utilized as a stopgap measure while designers worked on developing a more permanent fix. The long-term solution decided upon was the $27.3 million Private-Public Partnership Waterfront Revitalization Plan, which was broken down into multiple phases.

Runoff Retention Won’t Solve All Your Stormwater Problems

3/18/2015

The stormwater industry is looking to Low Impact Development practices to solve the challenge of managing millions of gallons of water runoff in cities. Storage is a step toward meeting a fundamental goal of LID – runoff reduction.

One of the most popular solutions being adopted by environmental planners is storing the first inch of rainwater from developed sites such as parking lots, driveways, roads or other impervious surfaces. Engineers are eyeing potential problems and using creative solutions to make water storage work even better.

Some cities are adding regulations or incentives for LID water storage, but they may lack any requirement for pre-treatment of the water. This means that storage equipment will eventually fill up with dirt, trash and oil. Maintenance is too often ignored, leading to the release of dirty water.

That doesn’t mean stormwater retention is a bad idea. It’s a great solution! It just needs a little extra engineering help along the way. Ensuring that trash, sediment and oil are removed is a great start.

PictureAqua-Swirls provide pretreatment to StormTank systems
Treating stormwater with an Aqua-Swirl along with storage is even better. That means good clean water is stored and released back into the streams and lakes that need it. When a mere 0.3% of the Earth’s freshwater is found in rivers and lakes, we can’t afford not to provide water quality treatment wherever possible.

Engineers are also pairing storage with surface infiltration such as permeable pavers.

AquaShield Presents Low Impact Development Practices at Chattanooga Engineers Club

3/17/2015

One of the leading topics in stormwater management today is the drive for sustainability, green infrastructure designs and Low Impact Development (LID) practices.

Mark Miller, research scientist for AquaShield, Inc., presented trends in LID and changing stormwater regulations in Chattanooga at the Engineers Club. Mark offered an overview of the topics and discussed the movement toward water catchment versus end of pipe solutions.

Key takeaways included:

  • Storage is important, but pretreatment is the first key to the success of a storage based LID plan
  • When picking an LID plan, consider the benefits of each. Pick the best possible solution for the problem at hand based on your goals.
  • Maintenance is essential and must be considered on the front end. Poor upkeep can subtract from the benefits of a progressive LID plan.

  • Biofiltration helps groundwater recharge and reduces the heat island effect.

There is no single solution for stormwater management. This makes multiple technologies needed to solve problems. Solutions can include, media filtration, surface and subsurface infiltration, treatment and storage, rain harvesting, drivable grass and many more.

Check out this awesome story about some very cool kids working to increase community awareness around their local waterway, reduce pollution and runoff, and help save a critical waterway for fish. This is a great example of what we can accomplish when communities work together. If your community is involved in saving water, tell us about it in the comment section.

4 Hidden Costs in Stormwater System Bids

2/24/2015

Civil engineers and contracting companies are under a lot of pressure to deliver projects on schedule and on budget throughout the site development process. With increasing focus on stormwater runoff, there are a lot of things to consider when looking at bids and overall project cost.

1.    Installation of many traditional concrete stormwater products require multiple pieces of heavy machinery. Having an extra crane on site for additional days can really add to installation costs.

2.    Sealing piping into a system might be extra. Some products are custom-designed and require little to no assembly on site, but others require sealing these devices at the time of installation and even include a disclaimer placing responsibility for leaks on the contractor installing the product. Read the fine print to ensure you aren’t adding time or risk to your project.

3.    Delivery for products can be very expensive and can even include road closures to get your finished product to the application site. Check to find out what kind of extra delivery fees you might pay that aren’t included in the bid.

4.    Maintenance might not be a top priority when a product is installed, but it sure will be later.

Picture
A system should be designed for maintenance, and not all products are created equal when it comes to inspections and upkeep. Check the product’s maintenance manual for using special tools or equipment, whether training is needed to maintain the stormwater system, and how often cleaning is required. You can bring extra value to your customers by helping them consider the future functionality of these products.

Water specialists and engineers are increasingly focused on low impact development (LID) technology and stormwater solutions that reduce runoff and provide water quality treatment. At AquaShield™ we developed an LID  pyramid to help our clients and engineers select the solution that is best for their stormwater project.

  1. Begin with subsurface infiltration as the most preferred design option to reduce runoff
  2. Consider subsurface infiltration
  3. Look for rainwater harvesting
  4. Biofiltration designs spanning both aspects of runoff reduction and water treatment
  5. Conventional designs including a variety of treatment train options for both water quality and quantity designs

Our customers want to know for sure that our products deliver. That’s why it’s so important to get third party testing and verification in our field.

Two of our products, the Aqua-Filter™ and the Aqua-Swirl®, recently received approval for the total phosphorus removal credits by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ).

The Total Phosphorus Removal standard is a system adopted by VDEQ to measure efficiency of the filtration system for particles from the water as well as meeting standards of removing prosperous to avoid dangerous levels of nutrient buildup in fresh water. Achieving this designation means we’ve been tested and demonstrated that our products achieve the required filtration.

The Aqua-Filter Stormwater Filtration System is assigned a TP removal efficiency of 40%, and the Aqua-Swirl Stormwater Treatment System is credited with 20% TP removal efficiency.

You can checkout the product pages for the Aqua-Filter and the Aqua-Swirl.

AquaFilter Receives Certification

No one does stormwater testing like New Jersey, so when you receive a nod from the top you can’t help but brag a little bit.

The Aqua-FilterTM Stormwater Filtration System recently received independent field test verification by the prestigious New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology (NJCAT). Based on this information, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued the Aqua-Filter Field Certification for the removal of 80% TSS at a filter loading rate of 16.5 gpm/ft2 (.037 cfs/ft2).

Many communities look to New Jersey’s progressive stormwater policies and in-depth testing to ensure that products live up to their performance claims. We’re proud to pass the test!

The Aqua-Filter is a flow-through water quality device that we custom design to remove fine-grained sediment, heavy metals bound to particulate matter and residual oil.  And that’s what it does – in the lab and in the ground.
